"I've always been a golf fan. I got bit by the bug of this game when I was about 10 years old and that will remain as an untold number how many years came after that,” says Bernard Steiner, Geneseo Resident.

Steiner has been going to the John Deere Classic for 44 years, since it started in 1971, and although a few things have changed…

"First prize that day for that tournament was five thousand dollars and the entire purse was only 25 thousand,” says Steiner.

…The energy and excitement he feels at the tournament is still going strong.

"You're seeing excellence and talent like you won't have an opportunity to observe any other way,” says Steiner.

Steiner loves the seasoned pros and fan favorites, but the golfers he keeps his eyes on are the up–and–comers.

"They may get famous pretty quick and might not have time to come back here in the future, so at least I can say to myself well I saw them play when they were here,” says Steiner.

Steiner says he still gets out onto the course regularly and plays a round himself; and his love of the game and the John Deere Classic never gets old.

"To me, it's so impressive and that along guarantees that I'm doing the right thing by watching it like I do."
