12-year-old boy brings gun to North Scott; charged with attempted murder


UPDATE:Eldridge police have released a statement.

At approximately 8:30 a.m. on today’s date the Eldridge Police Department was called to North Scott Jr High in reference to a student with a handgun. Officers took a 12 year old into custody and a .22 caliber handgun was recovered. The firearm was loaded but no shots were fired during the incident. A female Jr High teacher is being credited with disarming the student before police arrived on scene. The school was placed on lock down while officers investigated.

The 12 year old male student is being charged with Attempted Murder, a Class B Felony and Carrying Weapons on School Grounds, a Class D Felony. He is currently being held in the Scott County Juvenile Detention Facility.

Officers are continuing to investigate the incident and more details will be released later.

The Scott County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the incident.

The juvenile being charged is presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

EARLIER UPDATE: The lockdown has been lifted and the school will “continue our normal day at the junior high.”


A message sent from the North Scott administration at 9:27 a.m. announced that “North Scott Junior High is on lockdown at this time.”

“We did have a student bring a gun to the junior high. The student is in custody and the gun has been secured. … Everyone is safe and we ask you please not come to school or call as we process the situation with students and staff.”


A 12-year-old boy brought a gun to school Friday and displayed it, causing North Scott Junior High and North Scott High School to be locked down.

The boy was disarmed and was taken into custody.

No one was injured.
