8-year-old hit by car while riding scooter


UPDATE: An 8-year-old is facing surgeries in Iowa City after riding her scooter into traffic and being hit by a vehicle Thursday night.

Police told Local 4 News that the girl was riding on her scooter down the street and went into traffic. 

The driver was going under the speed limit and wasn’t cited.

Bettendorf Police Chief Keith Kimball said it could have been much worse. 

The girl is in University of Iowa hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, although she will need some surgeries.

Kimball said the the area is not a concern as far as speeding. Calls on the street are not higher than most other neighborhoods.


Police are investigating an accident in a Bettendorf neighborhood Thursday night.

Local 4 News was the only station at the scene at Hillside and Crestview drives.

It happened just before 7 p.m.

We spoke to officers on scene but they couldn’t give us much information. 

We have since learned that an eight-year-old was hit by a car while riding a scooter. 

No word yet on the condition of the child.

We spoke to neighbors on the scene.

They tell us it’s not unusual for kids to play in the street or see cars speed down Hillside Drive.
