A man was arrested Friday in the connection with the 2016 murder of a Bellevue man. 

An arrest warrant was issued Thursday for Drew Alan Mangler, 23, of Dubuque.  

Authorities took Mangler into custody without incident on Friday and charged with first degree murder. He is currently being housed in the Jackson County Jail. 

James Michael Remakel was found dead in his Bellevue residence on December 25, 2016. An autopsy showed Remakel sustained multiple sharp force wounds throughout his upper torso, neck, face and head area.

A conviction carries a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole.   

The investigation included the Bellevue Police Department, Iowa Department of Public Safety’s Division of Criminal Investigation, Division of Criminal Investigation Criminalistics’ Laboratory, Dubuque Police Department, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson County Attorney’s Office and the Iowa Attorney General’s Office.

A Christmas day death is ruled a homicide

BELLEVUE, Iowa – Investigators have ruled a Christmas Day death in Bellevue, Iowa a homicide.The announcement came from the Iowa department of public safety Wednesday afternoon. Police were called to a home on South Riverview street around 1pm on Monday. They found the body of James Remakel, 59; deceased. An autopsy revealed, Remakel died from multiple stab wounds.

Neighbors said it’s not something they see in their community of about 2,400 people.

A waitresses that works at a cafe next door to Remakel’s house, said everyone was surprised that something like this would happen in a town where everyone pretty much knows each other. 

She said when Remakel would come into the cafe, he seemed like an ordinary man that kept to himself, but she said his death makes them a little bit more aware of their surroundings.

“We’re located right next to his house, so even small things like taking out the trash we’re always a little suspicious; on our toes and always a little hesitant about going out now; especially at night,” said Camryn Reeg.

The investigation into Remakel’s death is still ongoing. Law enforcement is asking for the public’s help.

Bellevue death now a homicide

The death of a Bellevue, Iowa man has now been ruled a homicide.

Officers were called out on the afternoon of Christmas Day to a residence in the 600 block of South Riverview Street.

There they found the body of James Remakel, 59.

Investigators from the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s Division of Criminal Investigation were called in to assist with the case.

On Tuesday an autopsy was preformed on Remakel and it was determined that he died from multiple stab wounds.

Police are investigating the suspicious death of a Bellevue, Iowa man.

Officers were called out on the afternoon of Christmas Day to a residence in the 600 block of South Riverview Street.
