A man has been arrested for his involvement in the Sunday fatal traffic crash on Interstate 55 at Damen
Avenue, the Illinois State Police announced.
Rami Matariyeh, 23, of Homer Glen, was charged with one count of leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death, one count of leaving the scene of a crash resulting in great bodily harm, one count of aggravated DUI resulting in death, one count of aggravated DUI resulting in great bodily harm and one count of reckless homicide.
Matariyeh is currently being held at the Chicago Police Department District 01 awaiting a bond hearing.
Illinois State Police responded to the scene of the crash around 3:19 a.m. Sunday. An investigation revealed that a vehicle was driving on I-55 southbound at Damen Avenue and struck an on-duty Uber vehicle from behind. The Uber became fully engulfed in flames after impact. Three of the four occupants were able to escape from the vehicle and were transported to a local hospital.
A rear seat passenger, Jamie A. Poulos, was unable to escape from the vehicle and was pronounced dead on the scene. The passenger of the first car was injured and transported to a local area hospital.
The driver of the first car, Matariyeh, left the scene of the crash but was later apprehended at his residence.
Matariyeh was transported to a local area hospital for his injuries from the earlier crash.
