A driver was taken to the hospital Thursday night after crashing into a church in Coal Valley, Illinois.
It happened around 7:30 p.m. at Saint Maria Goretti Catholic Church on 22nd Avenue.
Coal Valley Fire Chief Dave Dunham says the driver suffered a medical emergency before crashing into the building.
He was taken to the hospital by his wife.
Nobody was in the building at the time of the incident.
Dunham also says the main beam of the building was compromised and it is unsafe for occupancy.
The church’s priest says about 300 parishioners use the church every week.
He hopes to continue services elsewhere while the building is repaired.
