Celebrating spring with free ice cream

Plenty of people in the Quad Cities celebrated the first day of spring with free ice cream.

Dairy Queen offered free cones all day to mark the occasion.

Customers were asked to donate any amount of money to the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital.

A lot of people say it’s a good excuse to celebrate what they hope is truly the end of winter.

“It’s been a long winter and it kind of gives everyone kind of that little step for summer, get happy, get outside a little bit, and the trade you get to give something back to a charity event, I think that helps a lot of people,” says Julie Montgomery, manager of the Dairy Queen inside NorthPark Mall.

“You really can’t have ice cream in the winter and it’s the first day of spring. Fingers crossed. I’m done with winter,” says Willnaja Shorter, a customer who stopped by with her family.

Montgomery says customers at her store were able to raise more than $2,000 for the cause last year.
