Dog-fighting ring: Last of 10 defendants sentenced

The last of 10 defendants convicted in a Quad-Cities dog-fighting ring has been sentenced to time served and three years supervised release.

The sentencing of Algerron Lee Goldsmith closes the books on a notorious case in which investigators confiscated 63 pit bull-type dogs from 10 homes in Rock Island and one in Davenport as part of a joint investigation by the FBI, Rock Island Police Department and the Quad-Cities Gang Task Force.

Goldsmith was charged with training four of the dogs for maximum aggressiveness for the purpose of dog-fighting exhibitions where bets were placed.

More than half of the dogs seized had to be euthanized because of behavioral or serious medical issues.
