East Moline parks go tobacco free

News

There’s a new effort to make parks cleaner in East Moline.

The city council approved a new ordinance that bans any form of tobacco from its parks at Monday night’s meeting.

The parks have been smoke free for several years, but this expands on that.

Frisbee golfer John Jordan has been playing in the parks for two years. He’s a smoker himself, but said anything the city can do to remind people to be courteous is a good idea.

“I don’t really want to bother any people with my habits and if there’s no sign or anything it’s just something you don’t think about,” Jordan said.

Tobacco is still allowed in the parking lots, but anyone caught using it in the park could be fined hundreds of dollars.
