Interstate 74 south of the Big X interchange is “nearly impassable due to drifting and blowing snow,” Illinois State Police warned Tuesday afternoon.

The Big X interchange is where I-74, I-280 and I-80 meet southeast of the Quad Cities metro area.

“The wind and snow is making the interstate extremely slick. It has reduced visibility to almost zero in places,” Illinois State Police-District 7 Lieutenant Dyan Talbot said in a news release. “The wind gusts are strong enough to cause vehicles to lose control and leave the roadway.”

Talbot also said drivers are experiencing these conditions on all north/south roads and urged drivers to find alternate routes of travel and travel with decreased speed, increased following distance, headlights on and additional caution.
