Illinois 78 reopens after Rock River ice jam

UPDATE: Illinois Route 78 north of Prophetstown is now open. The detour signing will be removed on Monday.

Progress is being made along the Rock River as an ice jam is starting to recede along Illinois Route 78 near Prophetstown.

Crews are cleaning up chunks of ice left along the side of the road.

The Whiteside County Emergency Management posted photos of a large ice jam on the Rock River on Tuesday.

The ice jam extends from upstream of the Prophetstown State Park to around Felton Road.

A second jam is near the Howard Road/Thunder Road area.

“The river remains nearly 100 percent covered in sheet ice” from the Erie Road bridge “as far as they eye can see into Henry County” past the Illinois Route 92 bridge.

Officials expect ice coverage to expand in cold temperatures.
