Iowa Supreme Court rules Medicaid can cover gender reassignment surgery

Today was a historic win for transgender rights in Iowa.

Iowa’s Supreme Court today ruled the state’s Medicaid program can’t deny coverage to a person seeking transgender medical care.

It comes after two transgender women were denied surgery for their gender dysphoria.

One of the women, EerieAnna Goode, is from the Quad Cities. She says the surgery can make a big difference.

“It can save lives. Transgender people are such at risk for suicide and I’ve lost transgender friends to suicide. I hope this decision helps change that,” she said.

This is the first Iowa Supreme Court case to recognize transgender people can’t be discriminated against.
