UPDATE, Dec. 6, 2022, 11:35 a.m. — Rock Island police announced Tuesday that they responded to the parking lot of Hy-Vee Monday night for what turned out to be some erroneous reports of shots being fired.

Upon investigation, it was determined no shots were fired, police said. The entire incident was basically a disturbance between juveniles, which ended up with a cell phone being damaged.

EARLIER: Tense moments at a grocery store in Rock Island on Monday sent people running to the back of the building. Police responded to the Hy-Vee on 18th Avenue around 6 p.m.

A Local 4 News crew saw three squad cars in front of the store.

A witness we spoke with who was inside tells us people started running and heard an announcement over the loud speaker that told everyone to stay inside until it was safe.

There’s no word yet from police about what happened.
