Local reaction to Trump’s Puerto Rico tweets

President Trump called the conclusion that nearly 3,000 people died in Hurricane Maria last year a plot by democrats to make him look bad.

Benjamin Bolet lives in Bettendorf but was born and raised in Puerto Rico.

He’s been there a handful of times since Maria hit and has seen a lot of improvements over the last year.

But he tells Local 4 News, more still needs to be done, and the negative tweets don’t help recovery efforts.

“I don’t want to get political. I don’t want to say who’s right or who’s wrong,” says Benjamin Bolet. “Let’s stick to the facts and understand the reasons why Puerto Rico was not prepared when the hurricane hit the island.”

He says Puerto Rico needs a sustainable power grid in order to be better prepared.

This way, if the island gets hit again, there won’t be such a high death toll.
