Man charged in wrong-way chase down Brady, Redstone crash after gunfire


UPDATE: The Rock Island Police Department says Zaccheus Hayes has been charged with two counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding and one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm.

The Rock Island Police Department responded to the area of 9th Street and 26th Avenue around 7:50 p.m. for a reported vehicle accident. Officers located one of the involved vehicles, which had been abandoned. An investigation revealed that the vehicle had been shot at prior to the crash and the driver had run from the scene.

The police department was notified around 9:15 p.m. that the driver of the victim vehicle was at Genesis East, receiving treatment for injuries as a result of the crash. The victim was eventually treated and released.

Hayes had reportedly rammed the victim vehicle several times before firing a shot into the vehicle. 

Officers located Hayes driving in the area of 17th Street and 20 ½ Avenue around 10:40 p.m. Officers attempted to stop Hayes, who subsequently fled and was pursued into Davenport where he eventually was taken into custody.

UPDATE: Zaccheus Hayes was charged with two felonies and multiple misdemeanors in connection with the chase that went the wrong way down Brady Street and ended with a crash into a parking garage.

Hayes faces felony charges of eluding and interference with a firearm and several misdemeanors, including carrying weapons, driving without a valid license, failing to maintain control, felon in possession of a firearm, reckless driving and striking a fixture. 

The Davenport Police Department said they “responded to the Centennial Bridge to assist the Rock Island Police Department with a vehicle pursuit involving the suspect vehicle from a confirmed shots fired call.”

According to police, Hayes’ charges “stem from failing to maintain control of his vehicle at a high rate of speed on wet pavement as it struck the corner of the Redstone parking ramp and operating a motor vehicle upon a public highway traveling the wrong direction for signage posted. The defendant then attempted to leave the scene without making notification of the accident.”


A chaotic scene in Davenport on Wednesday night after a chase comes to a crashing halt right in the heart of downtown.  

Around 10:30 p.m., Rock Island police spotted a vehicle wanted in connection with a shots fired call earlier that evening.  

Officers pursued the suspect over the Centennial Bridge into Davenport where police say it then tried to flee going the wrong way down Brady Street.  

Police used a squad car to push the suspect vehicle off the road before it could crash into the flood waters on River Drive.  

The suspect vehicle crashed into the Redstone parking garage just south of 2nd Street on Brady. 

The suspect was taken into custody and later transported by ambulance to a local hospital.  No word on his condition at this time.


ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Gunfire in Rock Island Wednesday night followed shortly by a car accident.

It happened around 8:00 p.m. at 9th Street and 26th Avenue.

Neighbors tell Local 4/Fox 18 News they heard at least one gunshot before the crash near Frances Willard Elementary School.

It’s not clear yet if anyone was hurt.

Police shut down about three blocks of 9th Street while officers worked the case.’
