Moline Police say a 31-year-old man is in “very grave” condition as of Monday morning after being hit by gunfire early Sunday.
Police were called to the 400 block of 8th Street just before 6a.m. in the Floreciente neighborhood.
That’s where they found a victim suffering from injuries after being hit by gunfire.
The victim was rushed to Unity Point Rock Island, then to Iowa City where he was listed as being in critical condition.
Police have not identified the man, but someone who knew him in the area tells Local 4 News he is a husband and father to three children.
Local 4 News reached out to several neighbors, but most asked not to be on-camera out of fear for their safety and the safety of their families.
But a few tell us the incident left them “traumatized,” shocked and scared.
One person in the area who asked to remain anonymous says they were surprised to see violence in their close-knit community.
“It’s terrifying,” they said. “They always say like you never know what could happen-a ricocheted bullet or something. I’ve been living here off and on for the past 20 years and this is the first time in long time that this happened around this area.”
On Monday afternoon Local 4 News counted at least nine bullet holes in a corner residence. Shattered windows and broken glass could still be seen around the home.
“This is like 6 in the morning when parents are getting their kids ready and they’re up,” said the nearby resident. “They’re not in their beds they’re walking around their houses. So if it was a drive-by or whatever the case may be, those bullets could’ve ricocheted to any of the joining houses. So it’s just one of those things that you just be cautious- there’s not anything you can really do but just hope it doesn’t happen around the area.”
Moline police have one suspect in custody in connection to the incident.
The case is currently being reviewed by the Rock Island County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Moline Police say the investigation is on-going and they are asking anyone with information to contact the Moline Police Department at 309-524-2140.
They are being assisted on the case by the East Moline Police Department and the Rock Island County Sheriff’s Department.
