As icy water moves down the green river it’s causing trouble for people in Colona, Illinois.
An ice jam on the Green River caused flooding around the area and Colona Fire Chief John Swan said more is expected.
“It gets us like this about every three, four years we’ll go through this,” Swan said. “It just got us a little early this year.”
Crews spent the day blocking flooded streets and tracking the water level.
“[The] ice jam has broken loose and is now going down the river to about Route 84 here in Colona,” Swan said. “So our main concern from this point out is to make sure the water continues to flow.”
But wherever the waters go, Swan said flooding will follow.
“The rock river’s very high right now,” he said. “So there’s going to be some other flooding downstream.”
Swan said they will be monitoring water levels to see if they’ll need to evacuate anyone down the river.
