Niabi Zoo will restore all removed memorial plaques, stones, and benches to their original locations within the zoo.

Zoo director Lee Jackson apologized to families in a statement to Local 4 News tonight:

“I recognize the decision to remove the memorials was a mistake. It was never our intention to inflict heartache and for that we are very sorry. We hope restoring the memorials to their rightful locations will help bring peace to all.”

Over the weekend, Niabi has contacted families to inform them of the restoration plan.

It asks any person, organization, and business who hasn’t heard from the zoo, to email them at

Niabi hopes to have all memorials back in place by the end of the season.

It’s also working on a plan to create a centralized location for memorials, while keeping the original memorials in their current locations.
