Getting a good night’s sleep is a key to success in the classroom, but for some students in Davenport schools that’s not an easy thing to do. 

Local non-profit One Eighty says hundreds of kids don’t have a bed to sleep in. Last year they gave beds to 215 kids. This year, they’ve already donated 120. 

The need is growing and they don’t have enough twin beds to keep up. 

Tabitha Anderson is one of the kids they’ve already helped. She is just days away from finishing fourth grade, but she’s more excited about her new bed.

The old one was too small so come morning she’d still be tired.

“I felt like I was just going to fall over and melt onto the floor,” Tabitha said.

That changed the day one eighty brought her a new one. It’s evident in her mom’s struggle to get her up for school in the morning.

“I’ll have to go in there like twice. Like, ‘Tabby, you gotta get up.’ She’s like, ‘I don’t want to. It’s just so comfy,'” said Kimberly Anderson.

Jeff Breheny is the head of the Prevent program. It partners with Davenport Community Schools to help identify families in need and works to get them furniture, appliances and beds.

He said unfortunately Tabby’s bed problem isn’t unique. 

“People don’t know how many children in this area at this point in time are actually sleeping on a floor,” he said.

One Eighty has king, queen and full size beds, but they need twin mattresses. 

“That’s what we’re low on. We’re trying to help out in every other aspect, but that’s our biggest demand right now,” Breheny said.

They have about 20 families waiting on twin beds right now, according to Breheny. He’s hoping donations from the public change that.

While Breheny has delivered hundreds of beds to kids, he said the response is always the same. 

“They’ll get up and just start jumping on the bed and I have no problem with that,” he said.

But it’s something Tabby’s mom is getting used to.

“[Tabby] went straight to her room and she started jumping. I was like, ‘No, you can’t jump on it,’ …She goes, ‘But, mom, Jeff would want me to.”‘
