One of the biggest races in the Quad Cities kicked off its 45th anniversary on Wednesday and runners can expect some new additions this summer.
Organizers of the Quad-City Times Bix 7 announced a special gold medal for this year’s racers, sponsored by MidAmerican Energy.
Race Director Ed Froehlich says he will also be leaving his position after more than 40 years.
He says he’s seen the Bix grow from about 500 runners to more than 20,000 and that it’s time to pass the torch to a new leader.
“It’s been my life, I don’t see myself not being a part of it in some manner but I won’t be the director, I won’t have an authority, so I’ll probably second guess everything that goes on but that’s about it,” Froehlich says.
For the first time this year there will also be a first responders competition.
Those teams will include fire, police, EMT and sheriffs departments from across the Quad Cities.
