A church in Coal Valley is left picking up the pieces after a truck smashed into it Thursday night.
It’s happened at Saint Maria Goretti Catholic Church around 7pm.
The fire chief told Local Four News the driver suffered a medical emergency before crashing.
He was taken to the hospital by his wife.
Father Anthony Ego, pastor of Saint Maria Goretti Church is left wondering what to do next.
“I was called from my house in Orion to come up to the church because a car had hit the building.”
Ego has only been the pastor for a little over 4 months and was shocked to when he found out.
“Stunned, didn’t know what to think.”
Now he’s left scrambling to find a place to hold services.
“The congregation is a little over 300 families.”
He said he never expected anything like this to happen.
“The building was struck in such a way that the car struck a beam and so the fire marshal said we could not use the building,” Ego said. “In the meantime, we have to find an alternative plan for our worship services and that’s still in process.”
However, he said he’s thankful because things could’ve been a lot worse.
“Just taking it one day at a time and see what we have to do and access the damage and go from there, we will get past this, absolutely,” said Ego.
The building is uninhabitable until further notice.
