Police officer who shot man on Sunday identified

UPDATE: The name of the police officer who shot a man Sunday night has been released by the Silvis Police Department.

John VanHyning is a veteran officer with more than nine years of service.

EARLIER UPDATE

The man shot by a Silvis police officer on Sunday night has been identified.

Devin M. Lovgren, 24, of Davenport was arrested and found to be wanted on an outstanding federal warrant issued by the U.S. Marshals Service in November 2018.

The warrant was for violation of probation on a federal firearms charge.

Lovgren was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Lovgren was released from the hospital in the early morning hours of Christmas Eve and placed in the Rock Island County Jail with no bond on the outstanding warrant.

Lovgren was released from the custody of the Rock Island County Jail on Wednesday and transferred to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service. 

EARLIER REPORT

One suspect has been arrested after being shot by an officer late Sunday night.

Local Police say the incident happened at 9:34 pm, when a Silvis Police Officer attempted to make a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 900 block 1st avenue in the north alley.

The reason for the traffic stop was not specified.

The vehicle fled from the officer and during the encounter then the Silvis Police Officer discharged his firearm.

The driver suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and drove away.

Later that evening the Colona Police Department observed the vehicle driving erratically in Colona, IL and attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle, but it also did not stop.

The vehicle then crashed near East 1200th St and Wolf Road, Colona.

The driver, a 24 year old white male from Davenport, was captured by Colona Police and Henry County Sheriff’s Deputies and transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police say that there are no further suspects at large and no further danger to the public.

The suspect is expected to be discharged from the hospital this morning and will be held in the Rock Island County Jail on an outstanding federal warrant that was issued in November 2018 by the US Marshals Service.
