Potential bomb scare in Monmouth Park has officials investigating

The Monmouth Police Department and Illinois State Police are investigating the possibility of a bomb in Monmouth Park.

According to a press release issued by Monmouth police, officers were conducting a motor vehicle accident investigation at the corner of N. C St. and W. Franklin Ave on Friday, March 8th around 5:00 p.m.

A person involved in the accident investigation alerted MPD officers to a suspicious container sitting on the ground next to a utility pole.

MPD officers briefly viewed a poorly constructed homemade container.

MPD notified the Peoria Police Department on account of their additional specialized resources. The potentially hazardous area was secured until the Peoria Police Department resources arrived.

Peoria Police resources dismantled the homemade device after it was determined it posed a low risk to the area.

The device and contents were secured and will undergo forensic examination.

An investigation into the incident is currently under way.
