Rock the Arts event offers free, family fun

The two-day event is free for families.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Enjoy a new event: Rock the Arts! The two-day public event, with no admission charge, will take place in a focused trio of downtown Rock Island venues: the Desoto Building, MidCoast Gallery West/The ARTery and Quad City Arts. Artists will be set up with areas showcasing a variety of media, from jewelry and ceramics to body painting. Evolved from the former Gallery HOP!, this downtown art stroll includes both Friday evening and Saturday afternoon hours. The afternoon time makes it a family-friendly event. There even will be a hands-on clay activity at the Desoto Building.

Artists include Jon Burns, Margery Franklin, Carolyn Krueger, Kimberly Kruse of Celestial by Design, Cynthia Legate of Twisted by Design, Glen Lowry, Lisa Mahar, Megan Quinn, Lori Roderick, Megan Quinn, Kelly Schrader, Mary Talbert for Crafted QC, Shari Telman, and Elizabeth Wakita, as well as private collector Jodean Meleski. At Desoto the event will include Quad City Wood Turners demonstrating wood turning and ceramic artist Joel Knanishu demonstrating raku firing. Local musicians, such as Dr. Heat, will add to the ambiance and there will be a lineup of live music both days at Desoto.

Quad City Arts gallery has on exhibition mixed media artworks by David Balluff of Bettendorf and paintings by Greg Dickinson of Clinton. Peppered with charm and humor both dark and light, the artists use illustrative imagery and bright colors to communicate ideas about familiar objects, environments, and concepts. The exhibition runs through June 22.

MidCoast's Gallery West will have the Friday reception debut for the Life is Art Exhibition, dedicated to the memory of local artist and musician William Martin Jr. This group exhibition of various artists will have works for sale, with a portion of proceeds going to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).
