UPDATE: The fire was contained to the vacant house, but firefighters remain at the scene looking for any hotspots or hidden fires.

The Muscatine Joint Communications Center (MUSCOM) received a 911 call of a house “fully engulfed” near 4th and Linn around 11:43 a.m.

The vacant single family home had a porch on the alley side fully involved with fire and smoke throughout the structure and into the attic area when crews arrived.

The main body of fire on the porch was “knocked down” within a few minutes, but the fire had extended into the house and attic, making it harder to access and extinguish.

Firefighters were able to eventually put out the fire that got into the house and attic by 12:49 p.m.

Investigators are working to determine a cause. Direct fire and smoke loss estimate is approximately $30,000.

There were no injuries to responders or bystanders.

The Muscatine Fire Department was assisted by the Fruitland Volunteer Fire Department and the Muscatine Police Department. Approximately 18 fire fighters responded to the fire, including some off-duty personnel.
