Woman rescued from river dies

Three first responders were treated for exposure

UPDATE: A 56-year-old Muscatine woman who jumped off the Illinois 92 bridge into the Mississippi River on Monday has died.

Emergency personnel responded around 4:30 p.m. to a report of a person who jumped into the river, finding a woman already in the water.

Rescue personnel conducted a water rescue and brought her to shore where she
was transported to Trinity Muscatine. She was later pronounced dead by medical
personnel at Trinity.

The rescue and investigation was conducted by the Muscatine Police Department,
Muscatine County Sheriff’s Office, Muscatine Search and Rescue and the Muscatine Fire
Department.

 

EARLIER REPORT

MUSCATINE- Emergency crews responded to a 911 call of one person in the water at the Mississippi riverfront in Muscatine around 4:30 p.m.  Monday afternoon. 

A rescue boat was sent to the open water portion of the river where the subject was spotted. Rescue personnel and paramedics were able to make a clearing in the ice for the boat to fit through. According to a press release from Assistant Fire Chief, Mike Hartman, the subject was rescued quickly.  

The subject has been transported to Trinity Muscatine hospital in critical condition.

Three first responders were treated for exposure as a precaution due to extreme cold and wet conditions. 

The Muscatine Police Department is still investigating the incident.
