The biggest unknown entering Kirk Ferentz’s 19th season in Iowa City is at quarterback. He said earlier this week at Big Ten media days he’s confident in the depth at the position and reaffirmed the on-field play in camp will determine the week 1 starter.
“We’ve got a lot of good players on our team that haven’t played in Kinnick or in a Big Ten game,” Ferentz said. “You know you gotta start somewhere, and that’s part of it. The only difference is that quarterback’s a really dominant, focal position.”
Iowa sophomore QB Nathan Stanley topped the Hawkeyes’ depth chart released at Big Ten media days, but junior Tyler Wiegers is expected to get the same number of reps with the first team.
“You just never know what’s gonna happen on the field,” Ferentz said. “That’s the great thing about college football and we’ll go into it with an open mind like we will at all positions and let guys compete. And we’ll see what guys are doing on the field.”
