Hawkeyes upset chances could hinge on third downs against Penn State

If Iowa wants to spring an upset of No. 4 Penn State on Saturday night, the Hawkeyes performance on third down will be important.

Iowa is ranked 24th in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision in third-down conversions on offense (47.8 percent) through three weeks. The Hawkeyes defense has been even better, holding opponents below a 24 percent conversion rate, which is No. 11 nationally.

The Hawkeyes struggled on both sides of the ball on third downs last year against the Nittany Lions. The offense converted 2 of 10 opportunities, while the defense allowed Penn State to convert on 7 of 14 attempts, which included a long touchdown run by running back Saquon Barkley.
