Perseid Meteor Shower peaks Sunday night

The 2018 Perseid Meteor Shower will boast 60-70 meteors per hour this weekend

QUAD CITIES - Clear skies are in the forecast for this weekend when the 2018 Perseid Meteor Shower peaks. One of the best light shows of the year shouldn't disappoint this year either.  Viewing conditions look great Saturday and Sunday night.  Sunday night should be the better of the two.

Mostly clear conditions are expected both nights so this should make for great stargazing! Find a nice comfy spot and gear up for an excellent show by following these tips:

  • Find a spot far away from city lights where it is as dark as possible to get a more clear view of the sky.
  • Look towards the north where the activity will be the most frequent.
  • Allow 30 minutes for your eyes to adjust fully to the darkness. (Put down the cell phone!)

And here's s special challenge from Chief Meteorologist Andy McCray - feel free to donate $1 for every meteor you see to our Over the Edge fund for Big Brothers Big Sisters.  I bet if you're outside for an hour late Sunday night, you could easily see 15 or 20.  And if you're out in the country away from city lights, you might see 50 or 60 in an hour!  Here's the donation link if you want to play along:
